Following the announcement of our restructuring of pricing for GameMaker Studio 2 exports, you may have some questions. Hopefully these will be answered below:
Why are you changing to a subscription model?
We believe that our new subscription model gives all users an affordable option to meet their specific needs and helps gaming-making become more flexible and affordable for everyone. The main change is with the export options available at each tier. Since removing the restrictions on the free version of GameMaker Studio 2, users can now learn how to make a game for free and the only thing that they can't do is share their completed game. We have added subscription options to cater for people who want to share/publish their games.
Will my existing licenses continue to work?
Yes, your perpetual licences are not going anywhere and will continue to function for the lifetime of GameMaker Studio 2. So you’ll be able to use your existing perpetual licenses while also being able to take advantage of our amazing upgrade offers.
Can I upgrade my existing licence to a subscription?
Yes, if you have a perpetual GameMaker Studio 2 licence then you will be able to take advantage of a variety of our subscription tiers without having to make an initial payment.
Once you have completed an upgrade, your perpetual licenses can still be used in the same way they have been previously however they cannot be used again to upgrade to another subscription.
The upgrade to a Subscription tier will then grant you the number of months shown below for the tier you have selected and these cannot be moved to any other Subscription even if you later choose to move to another tier while you still have free months remaining.
To upgrade, just add the subscription you'd like to your basket and the discount will be applied at checkout!

Please note that a type of licence will only be counted once, regardless of where it was bought from. For instance, having 1 Desktop licence from our website and 1 Desktop on Steam will only be counted as 1 Desktop licence.
What will happen to my existing licence if I upgrade?
You will retain access to your perpetual licence after you upgrade, so if you end up cancelling your subscription you will still have access to the exports/features that you originally purchased.
Can I cancel or change my subscription?
You can manage your subscription via your account, on the subscriptions page.
What happens if I change my subscription tier?
You will be shown the price difference that you would need to pay today and will be able to access your new subscription immediately. If you are moving to a cheaper tier, you will be shown the amount of credit your account will have and future payments will be taken from that until it is depleted.
If you had originally upgraded (as described in the table above) and been granted some months for free, these will not transfer to your new Subscription tier. They are locked to your original Subscription that you had chosen and no credit will be transferred to your new Subscription tier. If you later choose to change back to the originally selected Subscription tier, your free months will resume.
Can I buy a GameMaker subscription on Steam?
Yes, subscriptions are now available on Steam.
